Beginning of December the Month of Human Rights
Beginning of December… the Month of Human Rights
BAMRO: December… a month in which human memory is renewed
With the beginning of December, the world embarks on an annual journey through the most significant human rights observances—reminders of our duty toward every human being, and that dignity and freedom are not slogans, but daily responsibilities.
In this month, international commemorations intersect to reflect a reality that requires deeper awareness and stronger commitment.
1 December – World AIDS Day
This year marks the thirty-seventh (37th) anniversary of the adoption of this day in 1988.
It is a day that reminds us that illness does not strip a person of their humanity, and that the fight against AIDS is a fight for awareness, respect, and accessible care—away from stigma and discrimination.
2 December – International Day for the Abolition of Slavery
This year marks the thirty-ninth (39th) anniversary of the adoption of this international day in 1986.
It carries a global call affirming that slavery has not entirely disappeared, and that human trafficking, sexual exploitation, child labor, and domestic servitude remain modern forms of old crimes that must end.
3 December – International Day of Persons with Disabilities
A day that brings to the forefront the right of persons with disabilities to access, education, employment, and full inclusion in society.
It is a reminder that justice is incomplete when anyone is left behind.
9 December – International Anti-Corruption Day
This year marks the twenty-second (22nd) anniversary of the adoption of this global day in 2003.
Corruption is not merely a violation—it is a human wound that steals development, deepens poverty, and undermines justice.
10 December – Human Rights Day
This year marks the seventy-seventh (77th) anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948.
This day is not only a celebration—it is a comprehensive review of the principles the world pledged to uphold: freedom, justice, dignity, and equality.
18 December – International Migrants Day
An occasion that sheds light on the suffering of people who leave their homelands seeking safety.
It reminds us that migration is, first and foremost, a human issue—and that protecting migrants is a shared responsibility.
20 December – International Human Solidarity Day
A day that affirms that solidarity is not optional, but a human value that unites the world in facing crises, protecting the vulnerable, and supporting those in need.
December… a month in which we rediscover our humanity
In this month filled with human rights messages, BAMRO – the Belgian International Organization for Human Rights and Development – renews its commitment to defending rights, protecting vulnerable groups, and advocating for just causes.
December is not the end of a year… but the beginning of renewed awareness and a renewed pledge to restore human dignity.
